Success with the Senate

On Tuesday, April 18, over 200 nurse practitioners, co-sponsors and students came together for an overwhelming show of support. An hour after NPs rallied on the Capitol steps, Senate Bill 25 passed the Senate Consumer Protection & Professional Licensure Committee!

THE VOTE WAS 13-to-2

Senators Lisa Boscola and Camera Bartolotta (above, left to right) were among several legislators who voiced their support at the rally. Senator Bartolotta has said the law hurts rural communities that lack doctors and could be receiving services from nurse practitioners.

“We just need to allow nurses to treat patients to the fullest extent of their knowledge, training and education,” Bartolotta said in a statement. The senator reiterated that nearly 35 percent of Pennsylvanians live in areas without adequate access to a primary care physician.

Our work is far from over; as the next steps will be a vote by the full Senate. This hearing has not yet been scheduled, but in the meantime you can tell your legislator to support full practice authority for NPs.
